MEMPHIS, Tenn. – As leaders of their respective programs, University of Memphis football coach Mike Norvell and Tigers basketball coach Penny Hardaway are projected to enjoy solid upcoming seasons.
Pair them together for an event and apparently the odds for success increase.
Wednesday in the InnerWorkings Pro-Am at the FedEx St. Jude Classic, Norvell and Hardaway were members of PGA Tour pro Charles Howell III's team and helped the group spend most the day atop the leaderboard. Howell's team, which also included former Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs, shot 15-under.
Behind contributions from Hardaway, who consistently outdrove the other amateurs in the group (he routinely hit 300 yards-plus off the tee), and Norvell, who frequently displayed his skills from tee to green, the group made a late-round charge to the top.
