Compton’s Walk-Off HBP Ends 11-10 Marathon Win Over UT Martin

MILLINGTON, Tenn. – More than 4.5 hours after first pitch Tuesday, DH Jacob Compton was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning, as the Memphis Tigers (21-21, 5-10) pulled out a come from behind walk-off 11-10 win over the UT Martin Skyhawks (10-29, 3-15) in the Babe Howard Classic at the USA Baseball Stadium. Of Memphis' 10 hits, eight came with two outs, which included the team's first seven hits of the night.

How it happened:

  • The early portion of the midweek matchup was a battle of home runs, as the Skyhawks took an early 1-0 lead on a solo home run in the second inning from RF Will LaFollette, the Tigers answered on 1B Chris Swanberg's two-run home run in the bottom half of the inning, and UT Martin retook the lead 3-2 on a two-run home run from SS Casey Harford in the third
  • Memphis tied the game on a two-out RBI single by SS Ben Brooks in the third and took the lead on Compton's two-out two-run single in the fifth, which put Memphis in front 5-3
  • The Skyhawks rallied with two outs in the sixth against RHP Chase Kessinger and LHP Jacob Gilmore, as two walks and an error led to one run and a pitching change, while Harford put UT Martin back in front 6-5 with a two-run single
  • After the Skyhawks added a run in the eighth that put them in front 7-5, Memphis answered with a five-run home half of the frame that saw the Tigers bat around
  • 2B Austin Baskin tied the game with a two-out, two-strike, two-run home run, an RBI single by Brooks put the Tigers in front 8-7, and a two-run double by Compton made it 10-7 Memphis
  • Down to their final three outs, the Skyhawks rallied against LHP Dalton Kendrick in his second inning of work
  • The first three UT Martin hitters reached in the ninth, as 2B Alec Beaman made it a two run game with an RBI single, and CF Will Smith tied the game one batter later with a two-run home run down the right field line
  • The Skyhawks had the go-ahead runner at second base with no outs in the ninth, but Kendrick retired the 3-4-5 hitters in order to keep the game tied
  • Baskin doubled with one out in the bottom of the 12th, while 3B Logan Kohler drew a two-out walk and Brooks loaded the bases with a sharp single to left field
  • With the bases loaded and two outs, UT Martin went back to the bullpen, as LHP Warren Lee entered for Walters
  • On just his third pitch of the outing, Walters hit Compton in the hands on a 1-1 pitch, which forced Baskin in and gave Memphis the 11-10 win in 4:33, the Tigers' longest game this season

  • RF Blake Daniels (0-4) had his season-long 18-game on-base streak snapped, while LF Ian Bibiloni (1-3) and CF Zach Wilson (1-6) extended their respective on-base streaks to 16 and 14
  • Compton's season-high five RBIs are the most for any Tigers player in a game this season and his team-best tying 10th multi-RBI game of the year
  • With two RBIs, Swanberg also recorded his 10th multi-RBI game of the season
  • Brooks (3-6) tallied his fifth game with at least three hits this season, the most on the team, while Compton (2-5) notched his team-leading 15th multi-hit game of the season
