With DJ Durkin and Mike London, Maryland football well-equipped to handle Scott Shafer's departure

The news that Scott Shafer has stepped down from his role as Maryland's defensive coordinator to tend to "personal matters" is concerning on a human level. Hopefully all is OK in Shafer's world and he can straighten out whatever has required him to leave his new job at Maryland without ever coaching a game.

But for Maryland, Shafer's departure shouldn't be any kind of crippling thing. Maryland's coaching staff is already well-stocked with defensive minds, including two former defensive coordinators who have had demonstrable success in that job at the Power 5 level.

Head coach DJ Durkin comes to College Park via stints as the coordinator at Florida and then Michigan, and assistant head coach Mike London was Virginia's defensive coordinator for two years before leaving, returning and spending the last six seasons as the head coach in Charlottesville.
