When Maryland pulled its starting pitcher, Ryan Selmer, five batters and one out into their must-win super regional game against Virginia, it appeared that coach John Szefc would need to piece together a victory with his bullpen.
For nearly seven full innings, Robert Galligan was the only piece he needed.
The junior reliever took over with one out in the Cavaliers' two-run first inning and cruised into the ninth inning before disaster struck Maryland in the late innings again.
Galligan loaded the bases with no outs, closer Kevin Mooney walked in a run, then freshman second baseman Ernie Clement singled home two runs to give Virginia a 5-4 win to sweep the Terps and earn a second straight College World Series appearance.
