Allie Kubek caught the ball on the left elbow and immediately gave a pump fake. Not surprisingly, her defender leaped to contest a shot; the scouting report surely highlighted the 6-foot-2 Maryland forward as a threat in the post and as a spot-up shooter.
Unexpectedly, though, Kubek ripped through the left side, drove to the basket and split two more defenders for a layup. Those two points put the fourth-seeded Terrapins up 41-38 against No. 13 seed Norfolk State in the third quarter of their NCAA tournament opener Saturday. Following a less-than-stellar first half, the Terps led by at least three the rest of the way in their 82-69 victory.
