Maryland entered the eighth inning of Friday’s series opener in the NCAA super regional against Virginia with a two-run lead and game-winning performances from its top stars.
All-American starter Mike Shawaryn had spun seven scoreless innings to that point, and star center fielder LaMonte Wade staked the Terps to a lead with a bases-loaded, two-run double in the fifth inning.
But the Cavaliers exploded for a five-run eighth inning off Maryland’s top two pitchers, Shawaryn and closer Kevin Mooney, to win, 5-3, Friday at Davenport Field in Charlottesville, Va.
Shawaryn had held Virginia without a run and allowed just six base runners through the first seven innings, but a pair of one-out singles in the eighth inning brought Mooney into the fold.
