Maryland sophomore wide receiver DJ Moore has caught 10 passes in two games this season, with half of those coming on first down. His quarterback, Perry Hills, has spoken often about boosting production on first down in order to stay in manageable late-down situations, but Moore sometimes doesn’t even let it get that far. On those five first-down catches, he’s averaging 23 yards per catch, including touchdown catches of 40 and 45 yards in a 44-14 win over Florida International on Friday.
Moore has been a reliable safety valve in the first two games, too. He has converted three third downs, all with catches of 14 yards or more.
