Jermaine Carter Jr. often tells people that he likes to “play to my instincts,” and he couldn’t have found a better opportunity to prove it during the second quarter of Saturday’s game against Richmond. With Maryland clinging to a 16-14 lead, Richmond was pinned deep in its own territory on a 3rd and 13 when it called a screen to the flat.
It was the type of play call that could’ve exposed Maryland’s new 4-3 scheme, except Carter Jr. sensed it was coming once the ball was snapped. He blew the play up for a loss of three yards, which in turn set up another brilliant punt return by Will Likely and eventually led to a field goal.
