Postgame: Maryland’s defense is the difference in ugly overtime win over Northwestern

Maryland Coach Mark Turgeon was reminded of how difficult college basketball can be on Tuesday night, when his team could never seem to get out of its own way against Northwestern. Turgeon was nervous before the game. He didn’t like his team’s “look.” He only worried further as Northwestern jumped out to a seven point lead by the late stages in the first half, largely frustrating Maryland defensively by disguising its matchup zone with a man-to-man scheme.

While Northwestern earned higher-marks in a number statistical categories, Maryland never wavered in a 62-56 overtime win. The Terrapins committed 16 turnovers.
