RIVIERA MAYA, Mexico – Maryland Coach Mark Turgeon and Rhode Island Coach Dan Hurley engaged in a heated exchange near the end of Wednesday night’s Cancun Challenge final, providing a tense finish to the Terrapins’ 86-63 blowout win at the Hard Rock Hotel.
After Maryland forward Jake Layman hit a three-pointer to extend the Terrapins’ lead to 81-57 with just under two minutes remaining, Turgeon called a quick timeout. Hurley responded by staring at the Maryland huddle during the break, and soon after the two coaches exchanged words as they were restrained by members of their respective benches.
