Class of 2020 Maryland baseball pitching signee Alex Santos II heard his named called Thursday, being selected by the Houston Astros at No. 72 overall.
As part of their punishment for the sign stealing scandal that rocked Major League Baseball, the Astros did not have picks in the first two rounds of this week’s draft, making Santos their first selection.
According to Prep Baseball Report, Santos, a Bronx native, was ranked as the No. 19 overall prospect in the 2020 class and was signed alongside fellow New Yorker and top-50 prospect Jason Savacool.
The right-handed 18-year-old was selected at a slot value of $870,700 and will have the choice of headed to College Park or the Astros’ system.
