Nearly three years after the tragic death of Maryland football offensive lineman Jordan McNair, the state of Maryland finalized a $3.5 million settlement from the University of Maryland to McNair’s parents, Tonya and Marty.
Part of the settlement also includes a partnership between Maryland Athletics and the Jordan McNair Foundation, a non-profit created by McNair’s parents dedicated to educating players, parents and the football community at large on the signs and symptoms of heat stroke and heat-related illnesses.
Other parts of the settlement include the creation of the Jordan M. McNair Award for Courage, which will be awarded to one member of the football each season who “reflects the spirit of McNair by showing great professionalism athletically and academically, dedication to his team, strength in the face of immense adversity, as well as courage and conviction to do the right thing.
