For the past four years, Maryland football coach Michael Locksley barely fretted about the most consequential position on the field. Record-setting starter Taulia Tagovailoa provided such stability at quarterback that Locksley even afforded himself the freedom to teach other position groups, including the offensive line last year, while delegating extensively to his offensive assistants.
The departure of Tagovailoa this past offseason, however, compelled Locksley to reshape the program’s coaching infrastructure. Most notably, Locksley is embedded in the quarterbacks room this year, overseeing that position as the open competition for the starting job continues in the second week of preseason camp.
