The Maryland women’s lacrosse team’s comeback bid fell just short in a 13-12 loss to host Duke on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Division I tournament, handing the Terps a rare early postseason defeat.
Trailing 13-7 with 20:45 left to play, the Terps scored five straight goals to pull within one with less than two minutes to play. Maryland forced a turnover with less than a minute to go, but the potential game-tying goal was turned aside by Duke goalie Sophia LeRose as time expired.
It’s the first time Maryland has not advanced past the NCAA second round since 2006, coach Cindy Timchal’s final season.
