Maryland is pursuing former Alabama defensive back Maurice Smith as a graduate transfer, a person with knowledge of the situation confirmed Thursday afternoon.
Smith, a former four-star recruit who had established himself as a solid contributor for the Crimson Tide’s defense over the past three years, would be a major late addition for the Terrapins just six weeks ahead of fall camp. While Maryland returns senior defensive back Will Likely, it must replace three starters in the secondary, and the versatile Smith could provide immediate help at either corner or safety.
AL.com was the first to report of Maryland’s interest in Smith as a transfer Thursday, adding that Miami, Georgia and USC are also aggressively pursuing him.
