VILLANOVA, Pa. — Early in the first half of the Maryland men’s basketball team’s game against 21st-ranked Villanova on Friday night, the Terrapins’ Jahmir Young squared up for a three-pointer, but the ball missed the rim completely. The errant attempt led to a packed house at Finneran Pavilion chanting “air ball” every subsequent time the point guard dribbled or received a pass.
Not long after, Young again missed the rim trying to convert a floater in the lane, and the taunts grew even louder. The struggles of the fifth-year senior underscored Maryland’s travails overall during a 57-40 loss in the Gavitt Tipoff Games in which the Terrapins shot 24 percent and had as many turnovers as field goals (12).
