On Saturday, Maryland fans will get their first glimpse of the men's and women's basketball teams, both of which begin the season with national title aspirations, as the school hosts their annual Maryland Madness event at the Xfinity Center. Midnight Madness, as it was once known and is still called by many teams across the country, was started by former Maryland basketball coach Lefty Driesell, who decided to begin his team's first practice of the season as early as NCAA rules would allow. On October 15, 1971, Driesell had his team run a mile around the track at Byrd Stadium just after midnight, with lights from cars illuminating the field.
