When Walt Bell took over as Maryland’s offensive coordinator prior to the 2016 season, there were a handful of questions surrounding how certain parts of his scheme would affect members of the roster. Tight ends are always in an interesting spot when this happens, as a change in system can shift the entire group’s identity.
The position was certainly utilized last season, but hardly as a receiving threat. Five tight ends caught a combined six passes, including one touchdown, in 2016. That’s down from 18 catches in 2015, but on par with the six receptions from 2014.
