Maryland commit Kevin Huerter was named Mr. Basketball for New York State on Wednesday.
Huerter, a 6-foot-6½, 170-pound senior guard from Clifton Park, N.Y., who can play with and without the ball, has seen his national ranking jump in recent months and is currently rated No. 46 by ESPN.
Huerter joins a prestigious list that includes Lance Stephenson (who was a co-winner in 2009), Jonny Flynn (2007), Sebastian Telfair (2004), Elton Brand (1997), Stephon Marbury (1995) and Kenny Anderson (1989).
“Doesn’t surprise me,” Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said about Huerter, the second player from Shenendehowa Central High School to be named to the award, following Greg Koubek of Duke in 1987.
