Brian Shaffer made his first Friday start for Maryland, against a Purdue team that was 6-28, 1-11 in the B1G. On paper this game should have been a breeze. That it was, unfortunately it was Purdue that breezed, knocking Shaffer out in the fourth inning and almost blanking Maryland, 7-1.
Things got off to a rough start early. In the first inning Kyle Johnson homered to center, and Kyle Wood followed that with a double. Shaffer was able to limit the damage by retiring the next two batters.
It seemed that Maryland might right the ship in the bottom of the second.
