Mark Turgeon calls forward Ivan Bender the ‘biggest surprise’ of Maryland basketball’s preseason

With three weeks remaining until the season-opener against American on Nov. 11, Maryland opened its doors to the public for a practice and scrimmage on Saturday afternoon. A few observations from the 90-minute session:

Melo Trimble takes control. Trimble deferred to Dez Wells during his freshman season and to the senior tandem of Rasheed Sulaimon and Robert Carter Jr. during his sophomore year, but he’s made clear that this is his team now, and he continued to back it up on Saturday. This was just a preseason scrimmage, sure, but Trimble amped up his aggression.
