Former Maryland point guard Kristi Toliver is starting her climb through the coaching ranks. After helping coach the Washington Wizards summer league team this summer, head coach Scott Brooks announced Tuesday that Toliver will join the staff as an assistant coach for player development.
Toliver currently plays point guard for the Washington Mystics, and will be the first active WNBA player to serve as an assistant coach. She’ll be the third female assistant coach in the league, joining the Spurs’ Becky Hammon and the Mavericks’ Jenny Boucek.
According to the Wizards, Toliver has been working with the team on ball handling and has also coached the Wizards during five-on-five drills.
