Juan Dixon is no longer a special assistant to Maryland Coach Mark Turgeon, according to a person with knowledge of the situation.
Dixon, a Baltimore native who led Maryland to its only national championship in 2002, met with Turgeon on Tuesday. Maryland’s athletic department did not immediately comment on the development Wednesday.
Dixon, 37, had a served as a special assistant to Turgeon for three seasons after returning to the program in 2013, although his limited role did not allow Dixon to coach, recruit or assist heavily in player development. According to Maryland’s athletic department website, Dixon’s role was more geared toward “scouting and film breakdown, academic support and mentorship and additional administrative duties,” as allowed under NCAA rules.
