Greg Thompson became Maryland track & field’s first male Big Ten champion in program history on Sunday.
At the conference championships at the University of Iowa, Thompson bested out all of his opponents in the men’s discus. The senior threw for 57.76 meters, just enough to take down Michigan State’s Jeremiah Evans (57.05 meters).
The victory doesn’t come as a surprise. Thompson has been a force all season, from taking first place and setting a new school record (65.56 meters) at the Penn Relays to winning three Big Ten Field Athlete of the Week honors. He has won seven of the eight discus competitions he’s participated in this outdoor season, placing second once.
