Less than a year after leaving Maryland football for Florida State, Walt Bell is now an FBS head coach. The University of Massachusetts hired the 34-year-old Bell to lead its program on Monday.
Bell served as Maryland’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under DJ Durkin from 2016-17, coming to College Park after a successful stint in the same role at Arkansas State. Although the Terps’ offense never took off with Bell calling plays—injuries to quarterbacks Tyrrell Pigrome and Kasim Hill in 2017 certainly didn’t help—he joined Willie Taggart’s staff at Florida State in January 2018.
