Ex-Syracuse coach Scott Shafer is Maryland’s new defensive coordinator

Former Syracuse head coach Scott Shafer has been hired as Maryland‘s defensive coordinator, a person with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday.

Shafer, 48, is the first coordinator hired by new Terrapins Coach DJ Durkin, who has also added Alabama assistant Aazar Abdul-Rahim to his staff as a defensive backs coach.

Shafer, who was fired by Syracuse after going 14-23 during his three seasons as head coach, spent the three previous seasons with the Orange as defensive coordinator. He also spent a year in the same capacity at Michigan in 2007, where he joined Rich Rodriguez’s staff after serving a year under Jim Harbaugh as a defensive assistant at Stanford.
