It’s a tradition unlike any other: college football players switching numbers in between seasons.
Perhaps the most surprising change on Maryland’s new-look online roster (other than the absence of Melvin Keihn, who has indeed transferred from the program) is Ty Johnson switching away from the No. 6 he’s donned all three years in College Park. The now-senior will be returning to No. 24, which he wore in high school. It’s the number he initially wanted at Maryland, but two other players already had it, so he settled for the sum of the digits.
Last summer, five of Maryland’s defensive starters switched from double-digit to single-digit numbers, and that trend is continuing in the secondary.
