HUNTINGTON — A week from today, Marshall fans, families, players and coaches will once again join each other at the Marshall Memorial Fountain on Nov. 14 for the annual shut off of the fountain to mark the tragedy that struck Marshall University and its football program in 1970. The fountain is always shut down for the winter on the date of the Southern Airway charter flight, returning the team from a game at East Carolina, crashed short of the runway at Tri-State Airport in nearby Wayne County and killed all 75 persons on-board — the five person crew, five Marshall coaches, 38 players and fans, staff and families involved in the Thundering Herd football program.
