Marshall freshman Joshua Shapiro has been named Conference USA pitcher of the week after he earned his first collegiate victory Sunday.
Shapiro (1-2) tossed seven shut out innings and struck out five in the Herd’s 7-2 victory over No. 16 Florida Atlantic, and became the first Marshall pitcher to win the award since Matt Magaritonda in 2014.
The Ohio native allowed four hits in his first C-USA start against one of the league’s top hitting teams, leading Marshall to its first win over a ranked opponent in three years. Shapiro lowered his ERA from 6.25 to 5.
