Back in 2002, Central Florida’s athletic teams were called the Golden Knights, but the football program didn’t always go along with that color.

The Knights, who rose to NCAA Division I-A in 1996, were admitted to the Mid-American Conference for football only in 2002. That came partly at the urging of Bob Pruett, whose Thundering Herd hit the MAC ground running with four straight championships.
