Once upon a time, a northeast Ohio writer tried to tell me Akron’s Rubber Bowl “had character.”
“Outhouses don’t have character,” I replied.
Such was the Rubber Bowl, a Paleozoic edifice wedged between the All-American Soap Box Derby course and Akron Fulton International Airport. The Akron Zips escaped after the 2008 season, but for some reason the stadium hasn’t been bombed out of existence.
I could round up the volunteers to do it, all wearing kelly green.
Marshall arrived there on Nov. 5, 2004, a Friday night, and was undefeated in Mid-American Conference play. With a trip to high-octane Bowling Green eight days afterward, losing wasn’t an option.
