As Marshall athletic director Mike Hamrick took his place on the NCAA’s Division I Football Oversight Committee, he learned quickly that there are many issues with the sport, but one overrides all.
Player safety.
Take Hamrick’s first meeting as a committee member, a conference call last month. The meeting was dominated by the issue of contact during game weeks, and the committee approved a measure restricting full contact to one day.
(That won’t affect Marshall much, as the Thundering Herd has typically held its only full-contact practice on Tuesdays.)
“One of the big issues we’re talking about is safety in college football,” he said.
