HUNTINGTON — For the second year in a row, Marshall finished its regular season against a team that was finishing its season, period. And for the second year in a row, the Thundering Herd sweated it out to the final shot before winning.
Last season, the Herd went to overtime before beating Southern Mississippi. On Saturday at Cam Henderson Center, the game was in doubt until North Texas’ A.J. Lawson went too strong with a running layup at the buzzer, giving the Herd a 106-104 victory before 6,017.
The Mean Green (8-22, 2-16 Conference USA) was tied for last and did not qualify for the 12-team league tournament, but that didn’t mean it was going to finish with a whimper.
