James Kelly tipped in a basket off an inbounds pass to tie the game in regulation to prolong a wild game that saw Southern Miss coach Doc Sadler get ejected. Jon Elmore scored 35 points to lead the comeback from a 54-37 halftime deficit.
The Thundering Herd (16-15 overall, 12-6 league) clinched a bye into the quarterfinals of the Conference USA tournament next week in Birmingham, Alabama. The Herd’s seeding is third or fourth, hinging on Louisiana Tech’s game with Western Kentucky.
