Marshall’s unlikely bid to win Conference USA’s regular-season baseball championship was dashed Saturday by an equally unlikely source.
Old Dominion pinch-hitter Chris Livers pulled a Joshua Shapiro pitch over the left-field fence, giving the Monarchs a 6-5 victory at Appalachian Power Park. It was the final day of C-USA’s regular season.
The ninth-inning leadoff shot was Livers’ first career home run. The senior catcher entered the at-bat with a .197 average and seven RBIs in 76 at-bats.
The Thundering Herd (32-19, 21-9 league) began Saturday in first place in the league standings, but the loss dropped MU behind 17th-ranked Florida Atlantic.
