Herd Baseball heads to ODU for three and ESPN3 broadcast Sunday

HUNTINGTON — Any game at Morehead State can be an adventure for visiting teams, especially the Thundering Herd of Marshall. Games there can become blowouts for one side or another, as Howard McCann’s Thundering Herd did during a 35-9 rout of the Eagles on March 22, 1990, taking nine home runs out of the oddly shaped Sonny Allen Field — named for the player and coach of the Eagles who was 226-137 as the MSU baseball coach 1954-59, 1966 and 1969-75. Allen won the Ohio Valley Conference three times, 1957, 1969 and 1973.

There have also been games as close as 11-9 MSU in 2014, 11-8 MSU in 2012, 10-9 MSU in 2005, 24-23 MSU at home in 2002, followed by a 7-6 win in game one of a doubleheader at Marshall — and game two ended with a 19-1 Morehead State win at University Heights, a home run friendly park used by the Herd 1984-90, then 1999-2006.
