HUNTINGTON — In the first home game in Conference USA play for the Thundering Herd in Huntington, Marshall got a leadoff double and a walk-off single to beat the Hilltoppers, 3-2, at the George T. Smailes Baseball Field at the YMCA Kennedy Center on Route 2 north of the Marshall campus. The Herd improves to 22-23 this seasons, 10-12 in Conference USA play, 8-2 in games played at “The Duece” and 12-8 in all home games in Huntington, Charleston and Beckley, all in West Virginia but 1-2 hours from Marshall.
When the Herd joined C-USA baseball in 2006, a deal was struck with the West Virginia Power in Charleston for Marshall to use the Appalachian Power Park stadium for C-USA games.
