First Game Memories 1975: Akron Wins, But Zips Player Dies on Field

HUNTINGTON — It is year 40 in college football for me this year, having come to Marshall in January of 1975 after a bit of a lost semester at Ohio Institute of Technology in Columbus, Ohio. The electronics school was an IT&T school for engineers, but a Marshall employee soliciting on OIT’s behalf had assured both of my parents (neither of whom had attended college) it was just the right college for someone who wanted to get into broadcasting — which I was, but OIT only made sense if I wanted to be an engineer, which was not my strong suit, instead of announcing.
