HUNTINGTON — Jack “Chip” Cook, Jr., the son of legendary Herd Coach Jack Cook, has passed away at the age of 54. Known as “Chip” or “Chipper,” Cook led Herd in hitting as senior in 1985 with a .428 batting average — sixth best average in any single season in MU history — at the new home for the Herd, University Heights (beginning in 1984). That season, the Herd was 26-18-1 (10-8 in the Southern Conference). Cook also led team in games played (tied with 45), hits and runs scored (52 each, a record for hits stood five years, to 1990; a record for runs scored stood until 1998), doubles (17, setting record lasting 10 years to 1995) and total bases (100, first MU players to ever have triple-digits for total bases, and he is just 1-of 32 players in MU history to have 100 or more total bases in a single season).
