Marquette will be without one of its key defensive pieces to start the 2018-‘19 season following sophomore Greg Elliott’s thumb injury Oct. 5. He had successful surgery Wednesday afternoon and is expected to return in eight to 12 weeks, according to a team statement.

“We are disappointed for Greg, especially knowing how hard he worked in the offseason to prepare for his sophomore year,” Wojciechowski said in a statement. “We are confident he will apply his tremendous work ethic to his rehabilitation process and get back on the court soon.”

The procedure fixed a torn ligament in his left thumb.
