Wigan remain in talks with Manchester United reserve team coach Warren Joyce over their vacant manager's post.
The Championship club have been given permission to speak to the 51-year-old by United though they face competition from Hull City and Aston Villa who are keen to add Joyce as an assistant manager.
Wigan beat Cardiff City 1-0 at the weekend with Graham Barrow in caretaker charge but ideally want Joyce in place for Saturday's game against Reading.
Joyce was at United's Carrington training ground on Tuesday as talks continue behind the scenes with Wigan.
