At the start of the 1990s, Man United were struggling in the league under Alex Ferguson – who'd been in charge for more than three years with no success – and were hovering above the relegation zone, having lost 11 of their league games by the time their FA Cup campaign began away to Nottingham Forest on 7 January, 1990.
