Phil Neville leapt to the defence of Wayne Rooney by claiming the Manchester United captain should start alongside Marcus Rashford this weekend.
Rooney endured a largely frustrating evening as Jose Mourinho's side beat Northampton 3-1 in the EFL Cup, kicked off by missing a presentable early chance.
The 30-year-old was also heavily criticised for his part in United's defeat at Watford on Sunday.
Mourinho merely said 'goals' when asked what he expected of Rooney pre-match but the England international failed to find the net despite playing through the middle.
