Manchester United supporters congregated at Old Trafford on Monday afternoon as the club staged the first of its events marking the 59th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster. Club chaplain Reverend John Boyers led a short but poignant service in memory of the 23 people, including eight United players and three officials, who died after a plane carrying the team home from a European Cup match in Belgrade crashed at Munich on 6 February 1958. Day-to-day operations at the club ceased for a few minutes as staff joined supporters in observing a minute's silence at four minutes past three - the time of the crash - and in listening to renditions of The Flowers of Manchester and The Pride Of Football, tributes sung by local folk singer and United season-ticket holder Pete Martin.
