“Lady Norma and I are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Gordon Banks.
“Gordon was a fantastic goalkeeper, without doubt one of the best England has ever had.
“I was proud to call him a team-mate. Obviously we shared that great day in 1966 but it was more than that.
“Gordon will be deeply missed and our thoughts are with his family at this very sad time.”Like Charlton, Banks was one of the English footballers renowned around the globe, after helping the national team to lift the Jules Rimet trophy in 1966 and defend it as far as the quarter-final in Mexico four years later.
