Salford City's Class of 92 owners want former Manchester United midfielder and Swindon boss Richie Wellens to be next manager at League Two club after interim boss Paul Scholes ruled himself out of running for the job

Gary Neville and Salford City’s Class of 92 owners want former Manchester United team-mate and current Swindon Town boss Richie Wellens as their new manager.

Paul Scholes has been in temporary charge of the League Two club since they sacked Graham Alexander three weeks ago but they want to make an appointment and were impressed with the way Wellens won promotion from their division last season.

Wellens, 40, is a Mancunian who joined United at the age of 10 after being spotted by Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant Brian Kidd.
