Roma 'growing concerned with Chris Smalling's fitness' with the former Manchester United defender set to miss his 20th game of the season on Sunday when his side face Napoli

Roma are becoming concerned with Chris Smalling's fitness with the English defender set to miss his 20th match of the season against Napoli on Sunday.

The 31-year-old has suffered from knee and thigh injuries this season, meaning he has only played in 14 out of Roma's 27 league matches since completing his £13million move from Manchester United last summer.

Smalling nearly returned to first-team action as he made an appearance on Roma substitutes' bench for the Europa League last-16 first-leg tie with Shakhtar Donetsk on March 11 - but an inflammation of previous knee problems means he is back on the sidelines.
