Rio Ferdinand BACKS Gareth Southgate's selection of 'impeccable' Harry Maguire for England's World Cup opener with Iran - and says the Man United defender has built a 'special relationship' with the manager

The BBC's pundit team expressed their pleasure with England's starting backline after the starting 11 was announced for their opening World Cup game against Iran.

Gareth Southgate has repeatedly shown his trust in Manchester United defender Harry Maguire, and he has been selected alongside John Stones at centre-back.

Former England defender Rio Ferdinand said: 'That goes back to the experiences [Maguire] has had with tournament football. He's been impeccable with England. He's not in form but you can see a special relationship that's been built with Southgate.'

Alan Shearer said he was 'pleased' that Southgate stuck by a back four formation to play Iran, adding: 'That was the right thing to do.
