Reserves in Manchester derby action

Manchester United return to Premier League 2 action with a derby against Manchester City after a pair of wins in the Premier League International Cup, over Sparta Prague and Middlesbrough, towards the end of 2016.

The Reserves' opening fixture of the year is a big one with the Blues making the short trip to Leigh Sports Village for a competitive local affair. The two teams drew 1-1 at the Etihad Stadium in September but much has changed since then.

Nicky Butt remains in interim charge, following Warren Joyce's move to Wigan Athletic, and there is guaranteed to be at least one change to the side on duty against Middlesbrough last time out with keeper Sam Johnstone loaned to Aston Villa and making his debut in the FA Cup defeat to Tottenham on Sunday.
