Red cards for dissent will clear the way for video referees

Sometimes a solution is so simple it beggars belief. Take the debate around dissent, new technology and video assistant referees.

There are two models currently under scrutiny. One has the remote official making the call and giving the on-field referee the decision via his headset.

This was the system used in the recent friendly between France and Spain in Paris. The video assistant referee (VAR) told the match official, Felix Zwayer, the verdict, and this was accepted without question.

As a result, France had a goal chalked off for offside, and Spain had a goal by Gerard Deulofeu given, having initially been disallowed.
